Despite spending £248 million on church growth in four years, the Church of England experienced more closures and a drop in attendance. The average age of worshippers increased to 61. The same is true of other churches in the United Kingdom. Dave & Cheri Kelso (England) believed God wanted them to do something about church closures. They began helping in a depressed neighborhood of Sunderland with a congregation of 12…no children, no teens, and no families. But God did something marvelous! No longer homogenous, the church is now comprised of 18 nationalities, is known for being a friendly and safe haven, and continues to grow. Families, couples, and singles participate in a range of activities. Children and teens numbered 39 at last count! The leadership of Gateshead Evangelical Church has developed so that the Kelsos see their way clear to help revitalize another struggling church! Located in a high crime, vice, and high unemployment neighborhood, six elderly people attend that church. Most of the residents would move away if they could. Now the Kelsos pray for God to do it again!
