In a culture largely untouched by the gospel, most people in Japan have no idea what Christmas is about. The day is more like Valentine’s Day. Most people go to work or school on Christmas day. Little more is done to celebrate it than to buy KFC chicken (apparently something they’ve adopted from the US), to eat Christmas cake, and for couples to go out on a date. Christmas sparks curiosity in Japanese people. Paul & Michaela Mackey (Japan) long for them to know the beautiful hope bound up the celebration of the incarnation. Their unsaved Japanese friends and neighbors ask a lot of questions about what they believe about Christmas. Questions like, “How are Jesus and Santa Clause connected?” provide opportunities to share about the birth of our Savior, telling why He came as a baby in the first place.
